What is your “official” position with Fullsteam?
I’m the founder and Chief Executive Optimist of Fullsteam Brewery.
What is your favorite beer from Fullsteam?
If I had to pick one, it’s the beer we simply call Fullsteam. Fullsteam is a hoppy ale/lager hybrid brewed in the California common style. Menuism.com‘s beer writer described the beer as “complex in its simplicity,” which captures it perfectly.
But like most beery people, my favorite is contingent upon the weather. Right now my favorite seasonal is IGOR, Chris Davis’ (@fullsteam32) first-ever bourbon-barrel-aged imperial stout. It’s fantastic. And I’m already looking forward to First Frost, our winter ale, brewed with foraged wild persimmons.
What is your favorite beer and food pairing?
It seems my most memorable pairings involve beer and Thanksgiving. A couple of saisons and a Thanksgiving feast. What could be better?
If you were a style of beer, what would you be and why?
Oh geez. Maybe a Belgian Wit? The name fits. I’m effervescent and zingy; sometimes a bit cloudy. Gah, this reads like a video dating introduction.
And last but not least, what does craft beer mean to you?
Community. Craft beer brings good people together. Here at Fullsteam, we’re very fortunate to have an on-site tavern and community hall, where a broad range of people and personalities hang out under one roof. That’s the great thing about beer: unlike any other beverage, beer can truly facilitate community. People rarely say, “I’d like to have a glass of wine with that person.”

“Craft beer brings good people together…beer can truly facilitate community.” This is what it’s all about, and Fullsteam continues to tirelessly cultivate that community in North Carolina. Now you know why I mentioned Sean, Chris, and the crew in my interview.
